Sandeep Sharma's Record-Breaking Over
New Delhi [India] April 16: In a surprising turn of events during the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals' fast bowler Sandeep Sharma made history by bowling an 11-ball over, marking him as the fourth bowler to achieve this feat.
This incident occurred in the 20th over of the Delhi Capitals' innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Sandeep's over included four wide deliveries and one no-ball.
He joins the ranks of Mohammed Siraj, Tushar Deshpande, and Shardul Thakur, who have also bowled 11-ball overs in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals, led by a strong middle-order performance from skipper Axar Patel and South African Tristan Stubbs, posted a commendable total of 188/5 in their 20 overs against the Rajasthan Royals.
After being invited to bat first, the Capitals got off to a brisk start, with opener Abhishek Porel taking the lead and scoring 23 runs in the second over against Tushar Deshpande.
However, the momentum shifted when Jake Fraser-McGurk was dismissed for 9 by Jofra Archer, followed by Karun Nair, who failed to score.
Porel, undeterred, formed a crucial 63-run partnership with KL Rahul, who contributed a steady 38 before falling to Archer, marking his second wicket of the match. Porel narrowly missed a half-century, getting out for 49 runs off 37 balls, which included five fours and a six, dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga.
Axar Patel then took charge, scoring 34 runs off just 14 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes before being dismissed by Maheesh Theekshana.
Alongside Stubbs, Axar built a 41-run partnership that kept the scoreboard moving. Stubbs finished the innings unbeaten on 34 runs from 18 balls, featuring two boundaries and two sixes. He targeted Sandeep Sharma in the final over, scoring 12 runs himself as Sharma conceded a total of 19 runs in that over, allowing DC to finish strongly.
Stubbs also formed an unbroken 42-run partnership with Ashutosh Sharma (15*), ensuring Delhi ended with a competitive score. For the Royals, Jofra Archer was the standout bowler with figures of 2/32, while Hasaranga and Theekshana each took one wicket.
